Our Celebration of Professional Wrestling continues!

Earlier this year over at Wonderpod-Online, Bruce McGee and PatMan created a new theme of podcast for our site. PatMan and I decided to continue the series with a conversation reminiscing about our experience growing up in Calgary, the “Hart”land of the Stampede Wrestling promotion. What a perfect way for two old smarks to contribute to the ongoing festivities and celebration of professional wrestling going on at Wonderpod-Online and the Bored Wrestling Fan?

When I was seven years old, I moved to Calgary from Unionville, Ontario, in the year of 1984. Like any child of this era, I was a regular viewer of the then WWF. My older brother and I were total marks, and delved into watching our hero Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and George “the Animal” Steele battle the devious Rowdy Roddy Piper, the massive Andre the Giant, and any of the heels managed by the evil mastermind, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan.

Suddenly, there was something new to watch on Saturday! There was ANOTHER wrestling show on! While it likely aired in Ontario, my brother and I were oblivious. And it didn’t just feature the big names squashing jobbers in every match either. It was different, fresh, innovative and wildly exciting. One episode later, we were hooked.

Somewhere across the snowy tundra of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, a young lad by the name of Pat(Man) was already a huge fan. He would dial his analogue television to channel 2/7 every week in anticipation of the great action and matches this unique promotion delivered. Whether it was to boo the baddies, or root for the faces, Pat was invested in the product like many fellow children of Calgary.

Earlier in March, PatMan and G convened on Skype to discuss and relive some of their favorite aspects of Stampede Wrestling, their contributions to the evolution of the art of wrestling, as well as how the-little-promotion-that-could contributed to the showcase of the immortals, WrestleMania.
