This is the second part in a series on WWE Pay Per View events.  If you haven’t read it already, check out the first part,  “Why I hate:  No Way Out”.

Last week, I introduced this series of articles with a brief history of WWE Pay Per View, and discussed my reasons against Feburary’s No Way Out event (which, coincidentally, is one week from today).  This week, we’ll take a look at the Backlash event, which will have it’s 10th annual event on April 26th.

I present my arguments against WWE Backlash, after the jump!

WWE Backlash (April)

Backlash – the name says it all.  It’s the first WWE Pay Per View event after WrestleMania, and features just that – the backlash from the WWE’s biggest show of the year.  Now, somebody please tell me why we need that?

WrestleMania is traditionally an event that would normally end feuds that have been brewing for months at a time (or in some cases, that started at the Royal Rumble, a la Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior).  Since the advent of Backlash, however, it doesn’t.  One of the reasons that WWE Magazine listed this year as a reason why WrestleMania is better than the Super Bowl is that we only have to wait 25 days for WrestleMania rematches, as opposed to an at least 7 month wait for a Super Bowl rematch.  Here’s the problem with that – WrestleMania is the longest, and therefore most expensive WWE Pay Per View of the year.  Instead of spending the $50 or $60 or whatever it costs for WrestleMania, why shouldn’t I just save the money and just drop $40 on Backlash?

There is absolutely no reason to have nearly immediate rematches from WrestleMania.  It’s – as WWE reminds us so often – “The grand-daddy of ’em all.”  In fact, prior to the influx of monthly pay-per-views, there rarely were WrestleMania rematches for quite some time after the show.  Hulk Hogan’s win over Yokozuna at WrestleMania IX is a notable exception, with Hogan’s impromptu victory being the start of a feud instead of the end.

Now, I’m not saying that there’s no room for a Pay Per View in the 5 months between WrestleMania and SummerSlam – but there’s no need for one this soon after the biggest show of the year.

Join me next Wednesday, as I take a look at Judgement Day!

  1. Again, I concur with the prosecution. "Backlash" is just too soon after the show that's supposed to be the biggest, grandest, most important, and the one "can't miss" show of the entire year. People who put all the money into getting or attending Mania feel rather cheated when you see the same things again. It just isn't necessary. Wait until the end of May to have the next ppv after Mania, at least.

WWE thinks that Mania is better than the Superbowl because of that? Ridiculous. Do they not understand why football fans, casual and otherwise, invest so much time, money, and interest in their sport? It's precisely BECAUSE they have to wait so long for any possible rematches that the Superbowl is one of the most-watched shows in the world. To say otherwise makes WWE look like idiots.

  3. I figured as much. Later on in this series you'll find out that I do have a Pay Per View that I would keep out of the secondary shows, but I'll leave you in suspense until then.
