Better late then never folks. Sorry but it’s been a busy weekend, but ets get this show on the road: (more…)
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… Wrestling was actually very highly rated and the WWE, then known as the WWF, had real competition. But that was 1997. Whatever, lets get started.
You may have noticed I’m running a little late this week – and have yet to post a SmackDown review as well. Well, I spent my Friday at an amusement park, followed by catching No Doubt on their reunion tour (which was a lot of fun), and of course forgot to set my DVR for my usual Friday fodder, SmackDown on MyTV, and Don’t Forget The Lyrics on FOX. Unlike DFTL, however, SmackDown doesn’t have a replay shown the next day on the Fox Reality Channel. I’ll get around to watching SmackDown one way or another and I’ll make sure to get a review up, but I at least wanted to get this week’s ThinkSoJoE’s Thoughts in, since I didn’t feel like it at all yesterday.
Japanese wrestling legend Mitsuharu Misawa passed away just after last week’s column went up, and the word was that he’d had a heart attack right there in the ring. Word is, that’s not the case, and that the botched backdrop he took just before his death caused a spinal injury which led to his death. Whatever the case, it was nice to see CM Punk pay tribute to him the next night on RAW.
Speaking of Punk, he’s really coming across great on the mic every time I hear him speak lately. I think he may also have more clean wins in title defenses in the past week than he had through his entire first run as World Heavyweight Champion. Hell, I think Rey Mysterio had more clean wins as World Heavyweight Champion than Punk did his first time around.
Oh, and Rey? Just because most of your fan base wasn’t around when you lost your mask in WCW doesn’t mean the rest of us haven’t forgotten. Forget about the damned mask and maybe you’ll actually be able to beat Jericho, who outsmarted you at Extreme Rules and on RAW this past Monday.
Ah, RAW this past Monday. WWE and GE (the parent company of the USA Network) are apparently in trouble over it. I guess the Securities and Exchange Commission doesn’t like it when you put out press releases touting that you’ve sold off a major brand of a publicly traded company when it’s really just a television storyline. Who knew?
Also, who knows where Finlay stands at the moment? Finlay is a tweener, kids. That means that he’s not a good guy, but he’s not quite a bad guy. Let him bash everybody’s skulls in with the shileighleigh for all I care, as long as he’s not dancing around the ring with Hornswoggle.
I’d hate to say it, but Tommy Dreamer needs to drop the ECW title, and quickly. The match he had with Christian on RAW revealed to me that Dreamer has lost a few steps since his original ECW days.
So Zack Ryder’s finisher is now called the Zack Attack? I’m with tharvey1 on this, his theme needs to be “Friends Forever.” I hear Zack Morris is still playing gigs.
“This is Your Life, Rock” it was not. TNA iMPACT’s opening segment had neither The Rock nor Yurple The Clown. It did have Samoa Joe punching Kurt Angle in the face though, that was nice.
So was James Storm’s promo. An interview segment with Raven and Storm both involved would the be the greatest thing in the history of things.
Candice Michelle and Sim Snuka were both released from their WWE contracts earlier this week. I’d actually forgotten that Snuka was still on the roster. Congrats to Drowgoddess who was in attendance for his final on-camera WWE appearance as the guy who may or may not have screwed up a spot involving The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25. The Divas can all rejoice that there’s one less accident prone Diva on the roster to accidentally injure them.
Interesting note, I played 1 vs. 100 on Xbox LIVE earlier tonight, and one of the questions was “Who beat Randy Orton in a steel cage match in June 2009 to win the WWE Championship?” Surprisingly, neither “the one,” nor any of the 5 people remaining in “the mob” got the question wrong. In fact, host Chris Cashman pointed out after “the one” got the next question wrong that she knew her WWE Trivia.
Well folks, that’s it for me, unless I wanted to step on JT’s toes and turn this into a Random Randomness knockoff, which I don’t. I’ve got no predictions for Slammiversary, other than Daniels beating Douglas, simply because I’ve really stopped watching the show for anything other than Raven, Daffney, and Dr. Stevie. Goodnight folks!
It’s line-crossing time with your Empress of “Impact,” so away we go!
“Welcome Back, Jeffrey.”
Anyone claiming NOT to hear the theme song from “Welcome Back, Kotter” playing in his head upon seeing this title is a dirty pirate hooker. And a liar.
What the deuce?! It’s me, tharvey1, again with a review of the latest WWE Superstars. I think this show belongs in the Random Randomness weekly column, but I guess it might be too random for even that. Anywho…off we go!
Match 1: Its a he…Santino! He has a message for Chavo. He says that chavo must be so lonely now that his Aunt Vickie has gone wee wee wee all the way home. HAHAHAHAHAHA! Chavo then makes his way to the ring.
This match is one of the very few matches that makes sense for this show. Santino is very funny in the ring. At one point, Chavo attempted to throw Santino into the corner and Santino did a cartwheel to avoid it. Santino blocks the third of the Three Amigos and turns it into a Jackhammer. He then gets greedy and goes for a frog splash, but catches a boot to the face. Chavo pins Santino 1..2..3.
Match 2: Woo Woo Woo! Zack Ryder against a random jobber (Mike Williams). This must be a nice change of pace for Ryder, as he is usually the random jobber.
I hate those half pants that Ryder wears. Woo Woo Woo….you know it! It’s just a matter of time until he is future endeavored. Okie dokie. Ryder wins with his Zack Attack. His entrance music should be Friends Forever by Zack Attack.
Match 3: The lovely, beautiful Maria is the guest referee between Eve and Layla.
Maria is the most important part of this match. Eve hits a cartwheel backflip splash onto Layla for the victory. That looked really nice too. Other than that, it was your standard diva match. After the match, Maria convinces Eve and Layla to shake hands. OK???
Main Event time: The All-American American Jack Swagger and the Hart Dynasty against Captain Charisma and the Tag Team Champs, The Colons
David Hart Smith starts the match with Carlito. There are alot of quick tags to start the match. I would not mind seeing the Hart Dynasty and the Colons for the Tag Titles…of course we probably won’t see that, as Legacy will most likely win the titles. Carlito hits the backstabber on Tyson Kidd for the win.
This show was actually pretty good and made sense for the stories that are going on at the moment. Very different than the random mess that has been thrown out there in past shows. Remember that RAW is commercial free on Monday. See ya next week!
Well, well, well. Here we are at another Wednesday, which normally means you’d read about my views about the week that was in professional wrestling. But this week, I’d thought I’d try something different. I dont know how this will turn out, but here goes.
The View of the Non-Wrestling Fan
James Guttman said it best in his book, World Wrestling Insanity: the Fall and Decline of a Family Empire, when he quoted the adage “For those who enjoy it, no explanation is needed. For those who don’t, no explanation will do”. I can sit here for hours, trying to explain to you why exactly I an a fan of the business this website is based on, but to be honest, I cant. What I can tell you, is that there were three things that got me going, my second eldest brother, some WWF Steel Cage wrestling game for the SEGA Mega Drive, and Shawn Michaels. Infact, Michaels and Bret Hart were my Tag Team Champions on that game. This was 1993. Little did I know of the future these two would have. But moving on, the reason this column is being written as you see it, is because of work, and my lunch breaks.
In the past couple of days, I have been taking in some PPVs to watch during my 30-minute break. Which normally means I get a full match in. However, what I have found, is that there people in my workplace, who cannot stand the sight of wrestling. They are the type who say ‘it’s fake’ or ‘they know what’s gonna happen, don’t they’? This is where the old adage I mentioned earlier comes in. No matter what I say, I cannot and will not change their minds about what they think.
The following is from the point-of-view of the non-wrestling fan. The PPV in question, is Judgment Day 2000. The match was the first on the card. A six-man tag between Edge, Christian and Kurt Angle versus Too Cool and Rikishi.
There was a time in this match where, I think it was Rikishi was in the ring, and he was beating up all three of his opponents. Now, rather than ganging up for a 3-on-1 assault, they attacked him individually. Infact, one waited for the other to be knocked down, before making his move. Now, common sense will tell you that, if you have three guys, against one, then the three should attack all at once, thus increasing their chances of beating down the one. I decided not to argue, and infact listen to their opinions of the action. Here’s some questions that arose, other than the one I just mentioned:
What is the point of that (Scotty 2 Hotty’s worm) when all that happens is a chop to the throat that misses by three inches?
They wouldnt be able to do this as much as they do if they actually connected?
and one that I came up with …
What was everyone’s fascination with Too Cool? They sucked!
Let’s analyze as the wrestling fan. Scotty’s worm is purely for show. Much like Rock’s ‘People’s Elbow’, or Hogan’s ‘Leg Drop’. They’re basic moves done in a way to make it look like it would have more effect on their opponent, when really, it wouldnt do much to them at all.
If they actually connected, you would only see a guy wrestle every few months. You don’t see the same guy fight at a UFC PPV 3,4,5 months running, because it would be almost physically impossible to not only compete, but to be able to recover enough from the beating they received in their last bout. Also, they are entertainers. I was told something which struck a cord with me. “That’s why wrestlers become good actors, because they need to act in order to do this (wrestle)”. I agree with this statement. Would the Rock, or Steve Austin, or John Cena be as good as what they in the movies, without performing in a wrestling ring? We cannot answer that, with a definite answer, but being involved with ‘Sports Entertainment’ has helped, and thats all the wrestling business is now. It’s ‘Sports Entertainment’, not ‘professional wrestling’.
I think the point I’m trying to make is, we all know we know it. Some of us can explain why we like this guy, or boo that guy, but some of us don’t understand why others don’t like it as much. My advice is, chances are your not going to change someones mind about it, but listen to their thoughts. Look at things from another perspective, a non-wrestling fan’s perspective. You might just learn a thing or two, but most of all, realize, that Too Cool really did suck.
Alright, a Tuesday off! For the first time since the ECW time slot change a couple months back, we’re running ECW in real-time (sort of). Not sure what’s booked tonight, so let’s jump right in!
*NOTE: Sorry for the delay in getting this review to you guys, technical difficulties kept me from posting this last night *
Tonight, it’s the WWE Three For All – all three World Championships are on the line tonight as RAW brings us three hours of action from Charlotte, North Carolina!
Dear Professional Wrestler,

BoredWrestlingFan.com is saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Japanese wrestling legend Mitsuharu Misawa during a match the other night. Rather than put it into words ourselves, we’ll let The Sun newspaper from the UK do it.
