  1. An Extreme eulogy

    Leave a Comment

    Tonight, the very last remnants of a company that I truly loved a decade ago will finally be laid to rest.  The letters ECW, which truly meant something to so many wrestling fans before the WWE got it’s hands on them, will finally be put out of their misery at 11:05 PM following a battle for the brand’s championship between two men who never competed in a real ECW match, Christian and Ezekiel Jackson.

    Though this contest will be contested under Extreme Rules, it will be nothing like the ECW matches that took place under the watch of Paul Heyman.  An independent wrestling promotion that dug and clawed it’s way up from late night showings in the Philadelphia market to become a viable number three (and some would argue number two) promotion in the United States, ECW was a victim of it’s own success.  Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff started to notice ECW, and started to buy up the promotion’s top stars.  Heyman couldn’t afford to keep his stars paid and ultimately, ECW closed it’s doors in 2001.

    The WWE bought the rights to the promotion, and in 2004 released “The Rise and Fall of ECW” on DVD.  The success of that release, and a suggestion from Rob Van Dam, led to a WWE produced ECW Pay Per View titled “One Night Stand” in 2005.  Several performers from ECW’s past participated in the event, which was a success for World Wrestling Entertainment.  By the time the company put on a followup in 2006, the decision had been made to bring ECW back as a brand of the WWE along with RAW and SmackDown, and at One Night Stand 2006, Rob Van Dam defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship.  Two nights later, he was given the ECW Championship on the first edition of ECW on SciFi.

    By December, Paul Heyman was released from his World Wrestling Entertainment contract following the failed “December to Dismember” Pay Per View, and from there, the brand started to evolve into what we’ve been seeing on SyFy every Tuesday night, which is a far cry from the gift that Todd Gordon and Paul Heyman gave the world in the mid 90’s.  Tonight, the show will air for the last time, and the letters E-C-W will finally be able to R.I.P.

    It’s the last stop before the final pit stop on the road to WrestleMania!  Jerry Springer hosts, and the Elimination Chamber participants will be facing each other in singles competition.  I’m half asleep, so screw it, let’s get started!

    Some NASCAR guy (note:  It’s Carl Edwards) hosts RAW tonight as we witness the next chapter in the war between Bret “Hitman” Hart and Vince McMahon. What role will John Cena and Batista play? Will Edge make another RAW appearance? And who will walk out with the Unified Tag Team Championships – DX, Miz-Show, or CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society? All this and more, tonight!

    Tonight, Rey Mysterio calls out the Undertaker! Rey/Taker matches always seem to be tough ones for the audience because they are (regardless of alignment) the two most over guys on the show. Taker is simply not going to be booed. How will calling out the Dead Man end for the perpetual underdog? We go to the opening credits. (more…)

    What’s up folks, welcome to our RAW review.  We promise not to bite your ear off or eat your children, but we can’t promise you that RAW’s guest host, Mike Tyson, won’t.  I’m not sure what else is going on tonight, but I’d expect some interaction between DX and Tyson.  Ready?  No?  Too bad, let’s go!

    Johnny Damon from your 2009 World Series Champion New York Yankees (w00t!) is the guest host tonight for Monday Night RAW! I have no idea what’s booked for tonight, but you can assume that it’ll have something to do with the Slammy Award Winning John Cena and his pursuit of the equally Slammy Award Winning WWE Champion, Sheamus. Let’s go!

  8. WWE Tribute To The Troops 2009 Results

    Here’s something interesting I just noticed – in the opening bumper, it no longer has “Hulkamania is runnin’ wild” as one of the featured audio clips – instead, it’s “Everybody’s got a price!”

    Let’s roll!  Tonight we’ve got John Cena “defending his title” against Chris Jericho, but first…

    BOOYAKAH, BOOYAKAH!  Whatever that means.

    Rey Mysterio makes his way out to the ring as that terrible announcer who got canned from ECW, Lauren Mayhew, does the ring introductions.  Mysterio is in tag team action, and his partner tonight is The World’s Strongest Man, Mark Henry.  They’re opponents tonight are Carlito and CM Punk.

    I love the matches on these Tribute to the Troops shows.  It’s really awesome what the WWE does for the troops, and the guys on the card always give their best.  Mysterio nails a double 619 on Carlito and Punk, followed by a West Coast Pop on Punk and a World’s Strongest Slam on Carlito, as the faces pick up the win in the opening contest.

    <COMMERCIAL BREAK>

    Eve introduces Santa Claus.  Santa is played this year by R-Truth, who doesn’t even bother to change the lyrics to “What’s Up” to anything Christmas or Troops related.  He complains that he’s gaining weight because everybody leaves him goodies when he comes to deliver the presents.  He’s got a sweet tooth, and he’s going to bring out honey right now – in the form of his helpers, the WWE Divas.  The Divas come down to the ring and pass out swag from WWEShop.com.

    Video Message: President Obama wishes the troops well.

    <COMMERCIAL BREAK>

    Still to come, John Cena defends a belt that isn’t even his anymore against Chris Jericho

    Video Package: The interaction between the Superstars and Troops.  In a touching moment, Rey Mysterio gives one of the troops the mask he wore the first time he came over to Iraq with Eddie Guerrero as his partner.

    <COMMERCIAL BREAK>

    Video: The Commander of the US Central Command thanks the WWE for supporting the troops.

    The WWE United States Champion, The Miz, makes his way to the ring.  We’ve got a rematch from Bragging Rights, as his opponent is the (former) Intercontinental Champion, John Morrison, who even gets a slow-mo entrance in Iraq.

    The Miz def. John Morrison

    Michael Cole takes a moment that despite John Morrison having the championship at the time of this match, he’d lost it this past Sunday to Drew McIntyre.  The Miz picks up the victory with his feet up on the ropes.

    Video Package: John Cena’s Tribute To The Troops history.

    Up next, Cena defends the WWE Championship against Chris Jericho!

    <COMMERCIAL BREAK>

    Chris Jericho is out first for his match.  At least they’re going the traditional route and letting the Champion come out last for the Troops show.  His opponent was the WWE Champion at the time of the taping, and say what you will about John Cena, you have to respect him for his dedication to performing for the Troops.

    In another great match, Cena picks up the victory with the Attitude Adjustment.

    Video Package: The Superstars in Iraq

    My Thoughts: This is the best WWE show of the year.  It’s bigger than WrestleMania, and the WWE considers these trips to be more important than WrestleMania.  Another great show, but I know I’m not the only one who feels like an hour isn’t long enough.  I’d gladly give up RAW or SmackDown for a week to see a two hour Tribute to the Troops broadcast.  Thank you, WWE, for what you do for the Troops, and thanks to the Troops for what they do for us.

    I’ll be back tomorrow with the Final Resolution Roundtable.  JT should be here tomorrow with a new Random Randomness, and making his BWF debut, chjpacheco will be covering tomorrow night’s Final Resolution PPV!
